After years of discussion and negotiation, Bud Grant will have a bobblehead. This is the second Bud Grant bobble, but this is the first one that will be produced for the retail market. Check out this link for more information on the first one! Grant will sell this bobblehead at his annual garage sale in a couple weeks. The detail is quite remarkable and Im sure it'll be a fan favorite! Obviously it has Vikings purple and gold, along with his dog Boom.

2015 Yearly Recap - Part 4
For those of us who are married or have significant others, this might be one of the most important posts you read on this blog. Jess is very supportive of my hobby, when she's out in the summer and hits a few garage sales looking for whatever she looks for, she always keeps an eye out for bobbles or sports stuff for me. She's found a few good deals too! But, I certainly return the favor as well! I've picked up several items (usually they are clothing related or purses) with her in mind. I've found genuine coach wallets/purses. I've also found giveaway type clothing items she likes (the Twins bomber and stocking caps) and even a Gopher cardigan that she absolutely loved.

2015 Yearly Recap - Part 3
I previously blogged about a deal that didn't work out. I take pride in making deals that eventually work out for me. I try to stick to my standards and budget as much as possible. There were a couple garage sale deals that worked out extremely well. There is no grand plan of figuring out which garage sales are the best. I've been to sales that were extremely well marketed that turned out to be duds (that's putting it nicely) and I've been to sales on a whim that turned out great. The first sale was marketed pretty well (not the best it could have been because they had so much stuff and 90% of it was quality stuff). I chatted up the owner a bit and can only assume he and his wife were pretty big sports fans in general. I wouldn't say they were the typical "collectors" though. I bought several bobbleheads at the sale plus some random other stuff (mostly sports related). I worked out deals where eventually the bobbleheads I kept were basically free.
The second sale was completely on a whim and it turned out to be better than the one I just mentioned. Lots of bobbleheads. Lots of other giveaway type items. I bought quite a bit of stuff, and sometimes at sales, the more stuff you buy the better deals you get. I was able to re-sell a lot of the stuff and traded the rest of what I didn't want, so it worked out quite well for me!
My main focus at sales is being nice and courteous. I was surprised that this doesn't seem to be a common theme among "garale-salers." Some are quite rude and in a hurry. I was at a sale where another guy drove up to the house, decided he was going to park in the driveaway (there were lots of items lined up on the driveway) and was smoking...and not just smoking...but didn't even put it out when he walked around the garage.

2015 Yearly Recap - Part 2
For every deal/find that works out...there's probably another deal that doesn't work. Earlier this year I heard about some bobbleheads that ultimately I was interested in. The seller had many other items that I thought might be collectible. I didn't know much about most of what he had, but a few things I did have some background knowledge on and figured, why not take a shot. Perhaps I sell those items and make a little money which would make the bobbleheads I bought "free" or at least cheaper.
Unfortunately for me...most of the stuff I bought wasn't that valuable and I didn't make anything on it. So instead of making some money...those bobbleheads ended up costing me a bit more than originally thought!

2015 Yearly Recap - Part 1
In my previous blog I mentioned doing a yearly recap. This will be a blog series as there are a few different stories I want to share. Some good, some bad, some good and bad! I try really hard to keep track of all the bobbleheads I come across, but honestly...its tough. Sometimes I just forget to update my spreadsheet and other times I update it, but not 100% accurately because I wait a few days and forget everything about a deal. Luckily for me...it's not imperative that everything is 100% complete!
The first garage sale I went to...a random drive by on my way home from work netted me a Hrbek/Gant 1991 World Series bobblehead. That might have been a bit of foreshadowing of what was to come in 2015. When it comes to bobbleheads that you might find (not super rare ones) the Hrbek/Gant is about the best you can get. The bobblehead(s) itself was in great condition. Unfortunately there was no box. For most collectors this is somewhat of a dealbreaker, especially when it comes to the Hrbek/Gant bobblehead as it comes with a picture box and styrofoam packaging. I already had my own so this was to trade or sell, which limited my market as I wasn't going to ship this one without the proper packaging. Sometimes tho, when it comes to great bobbles like this...you still pick it up because it was well worth it!
I've had some bad buys too at garage sales. Some people are very good and making a garage sale ad seem extremely appealing. Several times I've wasted my time in going to sales that appear (on paper) to be exactly what I'm looking for, just because there is an "S" on the end of bobblehead, doesn't mean there will be 10 or 20 of them (of course at times it does). So just remember, garage sales in general are very hit and miss!

Bobblehead Boxes
So...you buy a bobblehead off eBay, Craigslist, at a Garage Sale, from a buddy...wherever you get it...a lot of the times, it doesn't have a box. More teams are doing specialized boxes nowadays, but several still do the generic plain white boxes. That's a problem for a lot of us. Even if we display our bobbleheads, at some point they might need a box, or perhaps you don't have the space (like me) to display them all. Bobbles in boxes are much better than un-boxed bobbles! I've seen too many damaged and chipped bobbles because they are all thrown into one box. Hell, one of my first deals I made was at a garage sale, but it was over the phone. The lady was very honest with me saying several were damaged but plenty weren't. My sister-in-law picked them up for me. The lady crammed them into one box (minimal bubble wrap) and sent her on her way. I get the box and honestly I wasn't expecting much (over 30 bobbles for $20...I couldn't go wrong). About half of them were damaged, scuffed, or chipped in one way or another. Obviously the lady no longer had the boxes.
Well...now you never have to worry about having an un-boxed bobblehead! My buddy Bill (quite the entrepreneur) has bobblehead boxes available. Feel free to email him to buy your boxes! They are heavier/sturdier than the giveaway boxes too and measure 3 x 3 x 7 5/8!

What a journey...Goldy is mine!
Finally. I've hit a few garage sales the past week. Yesterday, was the best one ever. Quality over quantity...its a great motto and for me, that's why I'm calling yesterday, the best garage sale find thus far. This has been on my "Most Wanted List" for quite some time! In that blog post I wrote that I didn't think it was super rare and not very expensive. Since then I've seen 2 of these...both selling for north of $150. I just couldn't bring myself to pay that. If I didn't live in Minnesota, I might have pulled the proverbial trigger, but knowing that I basically live in Goldy's playground, I held out hope. That blog was 6 months ago and I had been looking for this specific Goldy for at least a year prior to that. 18 months is a long time to wait. But wait no more. As I strolled up to the sellers garage I immediately saw the bobbleheads displayed (about 15-20 of them). Then, like a tractor beam my eyes focused on a yellow jersey Goldy hockey bobblehead. Outside, it was no different than any other bobblehead. However, inside, I was a giddy 3 year old sitting in front of cake, or better yet...my dog Murphy eyeing a piece of steak, drooling in anticipation for what's about to be his.
Finally, I can add this one to my collection. University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Goldy Gold Country Hockey (Yellow Jersey) bobblehead. Hell yes!

Bad call?
Since most of the sports world is talking about the horrendous call that Seattle made...to lose the Super Bowl, I thought it would be fun...err...interesting...err...well we've all made bad calls and I'm going to share a couple of mine. Hindsight is 20-20 but dammit sometimes it'd be nice to know what's really sitting in front of you.
2 situations stand out for me. If I knew what I knew now...at the time I was in this situation, my collection would have an additional 120-130 bobbleheads! This happened early on when I was collecting. I had responded to a craigslist ad for Twins bobbleheads. If you've read previous blog posts, you'll know my passion started with Goldy bobbleheads but quickly moved to Twins bobbleheads. The guy selling them had several and invited me over to look over them and pick out the ones I wanted. I had no idea what I was getting into. He had lots of Twins and a ton of other random bobbleheads, many Minnesota related. Since I didn't know, at the time, that I was going to end up collecting all these random Minnesota ones, I focused solely on the Twins. The prices were extremely fair too as he was just happy they were going to another collector.
I'm sure my wife doesn't mind that I missed out on this opportunity. She'll probably smile and say "Thank God" under her breath or something...when she reads this. That is...if she ever reads this thing! And yes...I did go back to the guy and see if he had any of those still available and unfortunately he told me he sold all of them to a local dealer.
My second bad call has a very similar feel to the first. I was a newbie at garage sales. I noticed one that wasn't that much out of the way for me, so I stopped by on my way home from work. I scoured their entire sale and only came across 2 bobbleheads. The ad said "tons of bobbleheads." Obviously they were genius marketing wizards, right? Wrong...I asked about the bobbleheads. The lady chuckled and responded with..."oh, most of them were sold this morning, when they are all under $5 each, they go quick!" I pretty much kicked my own ass on the way back to my car. The 2 that were left...Delmon Young, both versions (SGA & STH), I figured he deserved to sit on that table a while longer.

2014 Spring/Summer Finds #1
The top spot on my 2014 Spring/Summer Finds list is all about one lucky day. I went to a few garage sales and thrift stores late this summer. The first one I stopped at, I found this Josh Willingham bobblehead. No, not the "hammer" bobblehead, the red base, season ticket holder one. Definitely the most valuable Willingham bobblehead!
At the very next stop, I found one of the most popular recent Twins bobbleheads. Kent Hrbek and Ron Gant from the 1991 World Series.
And lastly I found these 2 bobbleheads at my last stop. Quite the haul for me! Easily my biggest haul in terms of value when you consider there were only 4 bobbleheads total. Chi Chi Rodriguez and Maya Moore from the Lynx. Luck certainly one out that day!

2014 Spring/Summer Finds #2
Number 2 on my 2014 Spring/Summer Finds list is a moving sale I found earlier this summer. The gentleman that was moving, was truly getting rid of everything. He wasn't necessarily a collector but had lots and lots of bobbleheads as well as a ton of other sports memorabilia. We had emailed a couple times and he told me the names of guys he had. I knew he had some good bobbleheads, but wasn't sure just how good they were. When names like Puckett, Hrbek and Killebrew get thrown out there, I'm sure everyone hopes for the first year bobbleheads. But we all know that each player has several bobbleheads and really the first year (both SGA and STH) are the ones worth good money.
Knowing he wanted to move them, I was intrigued, so I went to the sale and bought several bobbleheads. I had a great time chatting with him and learning more about his "collection" even tho he repeatedly said he wasn't really a collector.
I came away with about 14 bobbleheads. Below is a picture of the best set.
That's right, Kirby Puckett, Tony Oliva, Kent Hrbek and Harmon Killebrew. On top of those 4, I also picked up a couple of the 1965 Ecumen bobbleheads and a complete set of the 2001 SGA set that includes Kirby Puckett, Rod Carew, Bert Blyleven and Dave Winfield! Sometimes its better to be lucky than good. On that summer day, I was 100% lucky.

2014 Spring/Summer Finds #3
Earlier this summer one of the first good finds I had was at a garage sale in Farmington. They had several bobbleheads, mainly Twins, but a few othe random ones as well. There are a couple reasons that this sits at #3 on my top 5 Spring/Summer Finds list. The first, I was able to add a couple bobbleheads to my collection. One (or should I say 2) is a bit more rare than the others. This one was extremely cheap, actually a bit cheaper than great garage sale prices! So I lucked out on it! This is a retail AGP Minnie and Paul bobblehead set. They are shaking hands (held together by magnets).
I bought several and there was a Twins nesting doll set that was intriguing. Because I love to wheel and deal, before I accepted the sellers price for all of the ones I was buying I asked him to throw in the nesting doll set. He had no problem doing it. I had 2 thoughts - it was cool and possibly rare/unique. The cool factor meant that at the very least I'd keep it for my own collection. I hadn't ever seen one like it before but I don't really search for things other than bobbleheads. I did a little google research and that turned up zero, which was either good news or terrible news. I went to a local sports collectibles store and talked to the owner. He said he had seen them before but not for quite a while and offered me $50 cash for it. At that point I knew I had something that was somewhat unique and valuable. Add to it that it contained the biggest of big Twins names (Kirby Puckett, Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew, Kent Hrbek & Gary Gaetti) I knew I'd eventually sell it on eBay.

2014 Spring/Summer Finds #4
Checking in at #4 of my best Spring/Summer Finds in 2014 is a group of Twins bobbleheads. No picture for this one (as I didn't remember to take it). I learned about a garage sale that had lots of sports collectibles. I figured I'd find something that I liked and it wasn't too far from my house so I checked it out early one morning before going to work. I'm glad I did. I came away with 11 Twins bobbleheads plus a couple others that were good trade assets. The deal I got was incredible as well. Since I bought so many, the seller was more than happy to give me a solid discount. None of these were rare or hard to find, but all of them were in excellent condition and most came in their original box too. The seller wanted to move these and I was happy to buy them.
As I mentioned - 2 non-twins made for nice trade bait too, one has already been traded and am working on another trade with the other. A few of the Twins bobbleheads were thrown into a bigger trade as well.
Sometimes if the price is right, it makes sense to buy - even if you don't have a current need or desire for a specific bobblehead. I knew these would be valuable down the road, and that road hasn't even been a long one!

2014 Spring/Summer Finds #5
I'm doing a 5 part series counting down my 5 best finds from the 2014 Spring and Summer. At times I won't be able to tell you where I found the specific item, not because I don't want to, but because I don't remember!
Coming in at #5 is a Joe Mauer Autographed bobblehead. This was a bittersweet find. I had went to an estate sale with some knowledge that several bobbleheads would be for sale and for pretty good prices. Notably, first year SGAs of Puckett, Hrbek, and possibly Killebrew. I knew for a fact the Puckett and Hrbek were there and had heard the Killebrew was also for sale as well as 15-20 other Twins bobbleheads.
If you haven't been to an estate sale, they can be quite frustrating. Not knowing where anything is located, the mad rush of people trying to get in to find those special treasures they value and at times unhelpful people who run the sale. At other times, estate sales are wonderful. This one fell somewhere in between.
I was lead to believe the bobbleheads were displayed (which to me, they would have been easily noticeable). This was not the case at all. They ended up being in their plain white boxes within another larger box, on the floor AND under a table. A few were displayed but not the ones I was hoping to snag. I scoured the house for 5-7 minutes before walking out. When I was about to leave I saw the box. There were about 10 bobbleheads left. Another guy had spotted it before me (obviously) but the one he didn't take was a Mauer Autograph bobblehead (seen below). I fully believe the guy saw Mauer and didn't take it out of the box to look at it. Once I saw the auto, I knew I was buying it. I bought a couple others for a decent price and went on my way.
This was a nice find, but I was hoping for more so I did leave a bit disappointed.

Slowing down
Perhaps it's just the luck I run into, but over the past couple of years, the spring and summer are usually when I find my best deals. Obviously a big part of that is the garage sale season is pretty popular from May to September. It was another great few months for me. I've blogged previously about my best garage sale finds and I'm planning on doing another recap of that soon. But it'll take a while for me to go thru all the deals to find the best ones. I'm guessing since Fall is now here and winter is creeping into the picture more and more every day (or so it seems) my "finds" won't be as common. Maybe I'll get lucky, maybe I won't.
I thought I had a to chance to get quite lucky as a collector recently found my blog and reached out to me. He had several bobbleheads he was looking to sell. And by several I mean...maybe 100-150? The problem I had, I was really only interested in about 10 of them. He wanted to sell them all to one guy. Eventually he did but that guy wasn't me. At times, I'm glad it wasn't me and at other times, it sure would have been nice to add those 10 to my collection. Bottom line - he found me thru my blog and that makes me happy. No matter if you are a current or former collector, it's fun getting to know all of you. I'll still be blogging (I sincerely hope that won't change for a long long time) but the highlights might not be as flashy as some have been in the past.
If you have blog ideas for me - let me know. I still want to put pictures out there of your collections. I think readers would love to see other readers collections and not just my bobbleheads. So send me an email with some pictures of your collections!

Cooperstown Collection Surprise!
Forever Collectibles released a "Cooperstown Collection" back in 2003. Included in it were former Twins stars, Harmon Killebrew and Rod Carew. I'm not big on the retail bobbleheads, I certainly have some, but for the most part I like the giveaways. When I started collecting, I saw these from time to time. They typically went for between $50 and $100. At that point, the only way I was going to pick these 2 up for my collection were garage sales or to get lucky.
Well I got lucky at garage sales. I just picked up the Carew at a garage sale 2 weeks ago and I had gotten the Killebrew at a sale about 5 weeks ago. Carew didn't come in the original box but Killebrew did. The box was pristine and looking at the bobblehead, it was even better than that - so I didn't take it out of the box. In prepping for my blog I had to get pictures of each bobblehead. I was amazed at what I saw.
Yep, a Killebrew autograph on the back of the bobblehead. I was absolutely giddy when I saw this. And it was completely dumb luck on my part. I was buying it at the garage sale either way so I didn't even take it out of the box!
These were limited to 5000 each and I believe Forever Collectibles named this series Legends of the Park, Cooperstown Collection. I've heard there were 10 players in this series, not sure of the other 8, but these are the 2 Twins.

Tis the season...
Springtime in Minnesota guarantees many things. Mosquitoes, Twins baseball, planting season and garage sales. Garage sales are always a good source of finding treasures, that is, if you are lucky. Usually you just search through other people's junk! I've blogged about garage sales in the past. Check out this post as well as this one.
I also wrote about my top 5 Garage sale finds from 2013. Here they are again.

Since its the garage sale season, I wanted to get a blog out. Many sales are incredibly fair and some even beyond fair (those are the ones that just want their "crap" gone). Other sales...are pretty much the opposite. I stopped at one a month or so ago, they had maybe 20 different bobbleheads, ranging from local stuff (Twins, Wolves, Vikings) to national stuff that didn't interest me much. I believe the cheapest bobblehead they had was $14. Not exactly a garage sale price. It appeared that the owners simply went on eBay and found listings of similar bobbleheads and discounted their bobbleheads by a couple dollars...seriously...a whopping 2 dollar difference! Obviously that one was a bust. As I found last year....more often than not garage sales don't pan out, but it seems like when they do, they are well worth it! I'll write about the good ones later. Until then...good luck hunting!

2014 "Goals"
It's January so everyone is talking about the resolutions for the new year. These aren't exactly resolutions, but I'll call them "Goals." If you are a recent visitor, you've probably noticed that I try to keep the blog somewhat light-hearted. Hence "Goals" :)
At the end of 2014 I'll go thru and review my "Goals" and see what I accomplished - if anything. Or perhaps I'll just be completely bored with this blog and say screw it! Onto the "Goals"
1. Get a couple more Twins red base bobbleheads. These are given to season ticket holders and currently I have roughly half of them. There are some rare and hard to find ones, but I'll do my best to hunt them down.
2. Find 1 ecumen bobblehead (for a price I'm willing to pay). There are 10 total. I figure if I find 1 a year, it'll only take me 10 years to fulfill the set! I know I can buy most any of them on ebay for $100 per...but I'm not interested in shelling out that much cash!
3. Find the 1991 World Series set. Again, I can pay good money to get this off Craigslist or eBay, but will wait it out until I find someone willing to take what I feel is a fair offer.
4. Much like the previous "Goal" I'd like to find the Twins Managers set
5. Come across a couple local celebrity bobbleheads. The ones I have now, I only knew of about 1/2 of them. So I'm not even sure who'd they be!
6. I'd like to get the Paul Krause and Bill Brown Viking bobbleheads. I know I'll have to pay for these, and I'm fine with that. I just need to pull the trigger.
7. I'd also like to find a Goldy bobblehead that I currently don't have. Right now I believe there are 4 out there that I'd like to own one day. It'd be nice to come across one of them in 2014.
8. I'd like to come across and Timberwolves bobblehead that I don't have, either a mini Crunch or Johnny Flynn. I also found out I need an Al Jefferson.
9. I'd like to complete the 2013-14 Wild bobblehead giveaway collection. There are 5 in total, I already have one (I'll blog about that sometime soon).
10. Last, but certainly not least...I want to have fun hunting. My wife asked me the other day if I ever think about the mileage and time I spend on bobbleheads - I do, I certainly consider that when making an offer for a bobblehead or selling one. To me, the excitement is finding the bobblehead. Getting lucky when emailing someone on Craigslist or finding something unique or cool at a garage sale. And of course meeting people along the way.
We'll see if I accomplish any of these in 11 months...I know number 10 will undoubtedly happen!

2013 Best Garage Sale Finds #1
The final blog post in this 5 part series of my best garage sale finds in 2013 is a simply a humdinger! Ok, and I got extremely lucky, you'll see why once you see the picture of the bobbleheads. Much like my second best find, I was lucky because I saw the posting the night before. Many times for garage sales, no contact information is left, only a street address. Why you ask? Because the seller wants people to come to their sale, even if you don't find what you came for, there is probably plenty of other junk you might have an interest in! This poster had left their email address, I took advantage of that and asked a couple questions. The next morning, I checked my phone and had a response.
The sale wasn't super far away but not exactly on my way to work either. As I wrote in one of my first blog posts, I'm completely unsure of garage sale etiquette. Plenty of listings specify a time the sale starts and ends. Some listings go as far as to say "No early birds" or something along those lines in a harsher tone! This particular sale started at 9 in the morning. Typically I'm well into my day at work by 9 in the morning. I figured I'd drive over to the sale and do a quick drive-by. If other people were there, I'd stop. I drove by...and unfortunately it was on a cul-de-sac...so I couldn't get a good glimpse of what was happening. I figured, why not stop and at least try to talk to the seller. The lady was still setting up but invited me to look around. I mentioned I emailed the night before about the bobbleheads. She pointed me in the right direction and I was ready to buy a few bobbleheads! I knew she only had Twins bobbleheads, but what I didn't know is she had 2 of the more rare and valuable Twins bobbleheads. Harmon Killebrew and Rod Carew. I always try to negotiate prices, unless I feel like the price is just so fair (or low sometimes) then I won't. I got those skills from my dad! The prices were marked on each bobblehead. $5 for Carew and...yep, you guessed it, $5 for Killebrew. I snatched those 2 up quickly, browsed a bit more, got 2 more, paid and left. The Killebrew one goes for over $100 on eBay and the Carew goes for anywhere between $35 and $50 typically. Oh and each of these had the COA too!
Seriously, I was super lucky with this garage sale, luck certainly has a part in becoming my best overall garage sale find in 2013!

2013 Best Garage Sale Finds #2
This past summer I scored my second biggest find at a local garage sale. I saw an ad on craigslist for a garage sale that included bobbleheads. Luckily for me, I looked because the garage sale started the next morning. I figured I'd run over on my way to work. I'm so glad I did. A couple people were looking around at all the items for sale. I immediately found the bobbleheads. The sellers had a huge collection of bobbleheads, not only sports, but comic bobbleheads, celebrity bobbleheads, minor league bobbleheads...tons of them. I'd guess there were between 50 and 60 bobbleheads for sale. I didn't look at them all, but they ranged from $1 to $3. Perfect garage sale prices in my opinion. I picked up several and asked if I could place them somewhere safe as I couldn't carry all the ones I was interested in. The sellers were extremely nice and after I picked out the ones I wanted, we chatted about the Twins season (which of course in 2013 was terrible) and whether or not Ron Gardenhire should be fired or not. Then, something wonderful happened. They asked...would I be interested in other Gopher and/or Twins bobbleheads. Uhhh, duh, does a bear shit in the woods? Of course I said! And out came 4 more Gopher bobbleheads and 2 more Twins. In total I picked up 16 bobbleheads for a total of $30. The 3 best are displayed below.

2013 - A bobblehead year in review
I've been blogging for nearly a month. 2013 was the first full year I really started collecting bobbleheads. I'd pick one up now and then before 2013, but as I've mentioned in previous posts, I did a lot more hunting in 2013 and I came up with some tremendous bobbleheads for really great prices. I also made a couple decisions that didn't go in my favor.
A couple people had told me about a couple auctions near the cities that had bobbleheads. The first one I went to had roughly 15-20 twins bobbleheads. I was interested in many of them, so I headed down to the sale after work. I was brand-spanking new to the auction world so I had no idea what I was getting into. It ended up being a waste of time and gas as I only bid once on any of the bobbleheads as they went for well over my limit. It started out fun, then just got depressing and frustrating. The second boneheaded move I made was to check out another auction. Whats the definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results? Oh well...I made another trek, this place also had 15-20 bobbleheads, but they were of all sports. I was interested in some, not in others. If it wasn't for one guy, I probably would have gotten them quite cheap, and Im sure he thought the same thing about me. Nobody else bid and he had more money (or a higher limit) than I did. I believe he took every bobblehead in the place. But I did come out of there with a purse for my wife...which she was super happy about.
Now - onto the good news. I'm going to do another series of blog posts, this one will be my top 5 garage sale finds. Starting with the fifth overall best find and working my way towards the number one score of 2013.
Other than garage sales, I was able to find a few good deals on Craigslist and eBay as well as thru connections I've made previously. We'll see come Spring/Summer 2014 if garage sales bear the same fruit as they did in 2013!
